What causes the chain to slip on a brand new mountain bike? Should I return the bike?
It's a Haro Flightline 2DX. I haven't even taken it on a trail yet. The chain slipped off going up a hill during its first ride on a paved neighborhood road. I put it back on, but it makes noise while riding now and doesn't seem to shift as smoothly. If it can't handle a neighborhood road, how will it handle a trail like that? This is my first real bike, so I need to know whether I got ripped off and return it. Otherwise, I love the bike.
In my humble opnion this bike of yours (I checked the specs on it online) is or may be your first REAL bike and yes Haro does make some nice stuff, this one is not speced out all that well for the $500 price range. There are other brands out there that didnt go as cheap as Haro did on this one. Look at the components,they leave alot to be desired and not much better than dept store ....sorry!
Your bike obviously has flaws in the build out of the box and whoever did it did not take the time to either test ride it or run it thru its paces on the stand before it went to the floor. Not saying you got a junk bike, it needs to be tuned properly and you need to learn how to do that because on this lower end stuff it can require that more frequently and you will save a ton of $ doing it yourself!
First off you need to take it back where you got it and let them do it right. If it was Sports Authority then DO NOT take it back to them, They are NOT authorities on cycling! Anywhere else you purchased this one from is unknown to me but if it was a sports store then take the bike to your nearest bike shop and let them adjust that rear derailleur and educate you further on your purchase. Yes you have a good bike (frame) but the components are less than what you could have done if you had shopped it a little more for that $500...
